A lovely Victorian woollen mill, which takes the visitor on a journey through not only from sheep to cloth, but from pre-industrial revolution, to the modern day in its history.
Learn what a weasel was (and what makes it pop) to how Fox's factory made the putties for the British Army.
See the machines in action on the factory floor. Our amazing and knowledgeable guide was Meg, who talked us through what each machine does, and how and switched each one on in turn.
See the machinery and engines that power the factory (very Steampunk) and about the home guard taking practice shots at the clock!
Feed the duck who swim on the mill pond and are always up for more food, and visit the café for a light bite to refuel while you try to choose which fabulous yarn you want to make your next project in, or sit outside and enjoy the view of this fabulous historic building and it's beautifully planted garden.
Such an interesting place and the volunteers around the place are so informative. You can tell they love answering questions which is great. A special thanks to the young lady in the mill who explained all about the machines, she was great.
Was lovely to visit as a adult. My nan worked in the factory many years ago so great history. Excellent guides, very knowledgeable. Friendly staff in the restaurant and great pasties👍
A fascinating look back to our industrial heritage. Providing a small, but much quieter, insight into how these mills ran and sounded. Set in a beautiful setting with plenty of free car parking. Cash and cards accepted. Good wheelchair access to main areas, other areas awaiting further development.
Staff were dressed in period attire, very knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. Attended on a day when the boilers were lit and the steam engines functioning, well worth checking prior to visit.
Small cafe and shop. Items made at the mill are sold in the shop
Appears to have further exhibits, activities and walks under construction.
Try to visit on Thursday's as that time the mill is running. The volunteer's show you everything, is really interesting.
A great trip to Coldharbour Mill. Being a Tuesday it was not an operating day but we spent over two hours exploring the various boiler house, engine house, beam engine. The factory visit was very interesting, held over three floors. The cafe was a must see with a great cream tea.
We visited on a Thursday and it was not an operating date. We have entered for free. Looks like only the operating days are charged.
However we explored over than two hours nice old technology, boilers, steam engines and much more.
It is a really beautiful place that takes you back in time and disconnects you from any daily things.
It has a nice outdoor garden, a lot to visit and free parking for however long you need.
The local shop there is not so nice as you don't have too many options for souvenirs but overall it worth visiting.
What an amazing and interesting working museum this is, with steam & production days, craft & art events and informative guided tours giving an insight into the local wool & textile production's origins and history. There is a large free car park, a quality cafe & gift shop and almost every area has good access for people with disabilities. Well worth taking up the annual membership for a small additional cost to the day entry fee, as allows unlimited free visits including steam days for a year. We highly recommend visiting for either a family day out, or anyone with an interest into industrial heritage.
